Aftereight Series Features Seminars/Workshops

September 2nd (Thursday)
An afterEight Series Concert : Melissa Chan (Soprano)
8.01pm, Esplanade Recital Studio

Paris, during what the French like to call the Belle Epoque, was the cultural capital of Europe. This period also saw the birth of cabaret, made famous by establishments like Chat Noir and Moulin Rouge. Wildly popular, the developments at Montmatre subsequently inspired the rapid diffusion of cabaret to major centres throughout Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Melissa Chan’s programme will capture the essence of fin-de-siècle Europe with songs heard in cabarets, salons, and music halls of the day. The programme will feature pieces by familiar composers like Francis Poulenc (Les chemins de de l’amour), Erik Satie, Gabriel Fauré, Kurt Weill (Je ne t’aime pas), Arnold Schönberg (Galathea), Benjamin Britten, lesser-known gems by Reynaldo Hahn (A Chloris, L’heure exquise), André Messager (J’ai deux amants), William Bolcom (Ancient Cabaret), not to mention selections from music halls in other parts of the world, such as Shanghai and Buenos Aires.

Malaysian-born Melissa Chan sang with the Singapore Youth Choir (now SYC Ensemble Singers) while schooling in Singapore. After a short but successful career on Wall Street, she returned to her first love and has since performed, to critical acclaim, major roles in Le Nozze di Figaro, Dialogues des Carmelites, Turandot and the title role in Alcina. Melissa was awarded the first prize in the JB Lemoine North American Voice Competition and was a finalist in the Couer d’Alene Symphony Young Artist Competition.

Melissa will be accompanied by Shane Thio.
